Techy no more

I feel like I've unleashed the Einstein in me, my eyes are nearly popping out and so I'm about to wear eye glasses, i started hallucinating and i became a couch potato only in front of the PC and my efforts had gone with the wind.
Here are my current pathetic situations:

~Situation one~
I'm trying to hook my PC with the TV screen, a larger monitor other that my computers' to play movies that I've downloaded. And so i thought or actually know that a certain cable must be bought to handle this easy task. So i bought this cable which has two different sides:

I placed these heads in the TVs slot [tried the 3 lines as shown below]

And then placed the above head in my PCs slot below

I began searching the channels but nothing is displayed! zero! nothing! I looked for other slots to see if i obliviously forgot one but there weren't any.
I've heard that in order to display your screen in another monitor you must have a video card adapter installed in your hardware. Now i don't know whether i have it or not but i fairly know that most PCs come with a built-in video card.
Now am i missing something here?

~Situation two~
I'm trying to burn movies with subtitles that I've downloaded separately all together but it won't work.
First, let me share with you the great achievement i made regarding this matter after real manual labor done on my behalf for days :p

I discovered (you may know that already but i just found out) that you can download subtitles and then upload them to your movie if it doesn't have any. Now in order to do that, you must download your subtitles from several websites. The most convenient and easy one is Subscene. All you have to do is type in the name of the movie, choose your desired subtitle language and then download it. The file will come either in .srt or .sub format which your PC obviously doesn't support.

The next step is, you download a software called Vobsub. It is one of the most excellent and efficient subtitle program I've ever tried. It supports the formats i previously mentioned and functions compatibly with most of the media players. Now play your movie with whatever media player you like and you'll find a green arrow right down the task bar:

Click on the arrow and a new window will open.
Click on "Open" near the empty bar and locate your subtitle file.
Now the following steps are how to customize your subtitle in the way that suits you:
- Check on "Override placement".
- H and V are to control the subtitles' position [right\left\up\down]. Just change the numbers and you're all set.
- Click on "Language config dialog..." to style your subtitle in an advanced mode.
- The "timing" tab is to control the subtitles appearance timing if it's too late or too early.

Now can somebody please tell me about a god damn software that burns the movie with the subtitles ....?

you have the right cables.

stick the black plug into the socket that is next to the blue connector for your mmonitor. think its called and s-video port.

the thing that your monitor is plugged into is your grpahics card, so you're already using your graphics card and not the integrated graphics on your pc. this is good cos your graphics card should have more memory on it anyway.

now reboot your pc. the s-video is old technology so it only really works if the pc starts up with the connection already made. its not plug and play like usb. which might be why youre not seeing anything on your tv.

then stick the yellow end of that cable into a video plug in your tv. just try them all :P one should work.

the red and white cables just leave.

one extra cable you'll need looks like a headphone jack on one end, which you plug into your pc's headphone port. the other end is a red and white/black thing like the ones above. the red and white/black goes into your left and right audio channel in your tv. red goes into red, white/black goes into white/black.

there are other ways of doing it, but thats what works on my set up.

hope that helps.

I'll be honest, I've never seen an S-Video -> Composite(yellow) + Audio(red&white) connector in my life, and I thought I've seen everything!

I'd suggest getting a normal composite cable on both sides (just like the yellow connector, but color doesn't matter) and plug them to the PC and TV.

In the back of TV picture, I see you have two AV inputs (the two sets on the left) and one AV output (set on the right.) The top row is for component connections. Just plug the video cable into one of the yellow inputs.

You're not done yet! Depending on your video card (probably ATI or NVidia,) you'll need to enable the video output. In Vista, you can do that in:
Control Panel->Appearance and Personalization-> Adjust Screen Resolution->Advanced Settings-> ATI or Geforce tab.

Find something related to multiple displays or something :) Good luck from there, as I don't have that set up myself.

As for the DVD and subtitles thing. I remember getting some "all in one " software that did the trick:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Avi2Dvd

Last time I used it was like 2 years ago, so I can't remember a thing :( All I remember is that it was friggin complicated!

I can't help you with your 2nd problem though on the first ...

According to your pics, you do have a video card and it has three outputs (Analog, S-video, Com socket).

The cable you got isn't the right one since you only need one head (yellow on both sides) to transfer the picture. The white/red are sound lines for left/right sound channels so they're useless.

Now there are two things you need to make sure they work properly...

a) Your video card's memory & PC Ram. The higher the better.

b) Screen settings.

I'll presume you know how to check for A so skipping directly to B...

- Right-click on your desktop > Properties.

- Go to Monitor settings where two shapes with numbers 1 and 2 inside that represent primary screen and secondary screen.

- Enable the 2nd screen as a Mirror screen, not as an extended screen. (Mirror shows your primary screen on both the monitor and TV while extended shows one as primary and the 2nd as an extension for that screen).

- If it doesn't work keep the settings as they are and restart the computer, make sure everything's connected properly and most of all set your TV on the AV/S-Video channel.

- If it still didn't work then I'm afraid your PC/Video-card can't handle it.

Good luck.

Hey Loala

I have successfully connected my PC to my TV. What you have is a completely odd thing, S-video on one side and an AV-output on the other side. This doesn't make sense and whoever sold you this horrendous piece of equipment needs to be killed. It simply cannot work.

What you need is an S-Video cable. They're a little bit expensive depending on length. Both ends are identical and they look the end you plugged into your PC. On the back of your TV, unfortunately, you do not have an S-Video input (unless it is not part of the photo).

In this case, what you need is an S-Video to AV output (white, red, yellow) or Component output (the blue, red, green). You connect the S-Video from your PC to the adapter, and from the adapter you output either the AV (you only need the yellow) or the Component (you need the red, green and blue).

Once that is done you need to tell your computer to output the screen on your TV. To do that, right click on your desktop, go to properties, then go to Settings. Click "extend desktop on this monitor" and select monitor 2.

If this is all very confusing, get an HDTV and you simply plug your PC to your TV using the same cable you plug your PC with your regular monitor :P

I hate KSA. For some reason, it blocks all images being uploaded from kuwait. This includes mac's posts. :(

I might not be of any help because I managed to connect my tv with my laptop since I was fortunate enough to have video-output (yellow jack) on my laptop. So I connect that to my tv and with function + F5...and voula..

This might be useless to you unless you have a laptop.

Anyway, as for connecting the sound, I agree with skunk about finding a cable with a headphone jack. you can use the one that comes with the digital camera (if you have one). it'll be a cable with headphone jack and 2 ends yellow and white.

I always had difficulty in burning movies with subtitles so keep in the loop once you find a method that works.

To burn DVDs with the subtitles, you need a program like Nero which supports it. You could then create subtitle tracks that can be enabled through your DVD player.

you need to upgrade your audio cables to gold plated ones. Then you will notice a difference...
