My Windows drive format is NTFS. I came to understand that Mac OS cannot accept NTFS based files as Readable\Writable rather, Read-Only (no rename, delete, copy etc) as Mac is compatible with FAT32 drive formats.
My external Hard Drive is compatible with Mac OS and my files are already in it. So my question is:
Do i need to format my external Hard Drive to FAT32 so that my files can be Readable\Writable in Mac? Or there is no problem regarding my Drive because it's already compatible with it?

9 Interruptions:
No need to format any thing usually the external HD come with FAT32
your external HD must be something compatible with both OS :)
so if ur HD is FAT32 , its done u can use it in both Windows and Mac
I think, in your case, you should, because some external HDs (like Buffalo) are set to work only with windows. so, you have to change this setting.
1. take the data you want out of the external HD and put them into another HD.
2. now, plug it into your iMac.
3. click on "Go" on the upper menu bar.
4. click on "Utilities".
5. open "Disk Utility".
6. choose your external HD on the left.
7. choose "Erase" the one next to "RAID".
8. choose "MS-DOS (FAT)" from Volume Format.
9. rename the HD.
10. click "Erase".
11. put your data back into your external HD and enjoy your iMac. :P
I am sorry I am no help:(
You are correct, Mac OSX cannot write to NTFS. Use FAT32 to make it work on both machines.
ummm... i agree with qabbani..
if it's already compatible.. why re-format it!
now what will happen is the HD will convert the data by itself
and that's why it takes a lil longer to transfer data
that should also solve any data modifying problems you may face
the whole FAT32 and NTFS data exchange problems is long gone with the USB 2.0
you'll be able to modify data the way you want..
if for some reason you faced a problem.. you can go ahead and follow the steps provided by anonymous
but that should be your last resort.. ain't no technician will ever suggest re-formatting!
it's not very healthy to change the format!!
it will damage it
if your HD is 120GB.. and it currently gives 118GB capacity
it will go down to 116 or 115!!!
If you were in the States, you could make an appointment with the Apple Nerds, free of charge, and they will help you solve your problem!
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
iMac? You got a Mac?
Like anonymous said. You would like to have firewire connectivity for anything over 100GB but it depends on your Windows PC & HD ports.
Good luck.
All my external HDs are FAT! I think it needs to be in FAT to be able to be used on both
